Celebrating a Life Well Lived

1958 — 2024

Godfrey Mungai Kamau, an example of sacrificial love, strength and hard work was promoted to glory on April 10, 2024 at the age of 66. He is preceded in death by his parents James Kamau Gatarwa, Emily Nyakio Kamau and his older brother Arthur Gatarwa Kamau.He is survived by his siblings Irene Gathoni Ndwaru, Serah Waithera Kamau, Hannah Njeri (Edward Gachunu) and Benjamin Kihika Kamau. He was a dedicated father, grandfather and uncle to many.

Early Life —

Godfrey was born in Kariti village, Gaichanjiru Location, Murang’a district. He attended Mairungi Primary School, followed by Njiiri's High school and Kagumo High school, where he graduated in 1977. During his high school years, Godfrey was an active member of the school teams, excelling in hockey and soccer. 

Godfrey went on to pursue higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree. He was a creative and artistic person who enjoyed photography and music in his free time. He was particularly fond of the music of Abba, Kenny Rogers, and Dolly Parton, and could often be found listening to their records or whistling along to their songs.

 

Work Life —

After graduation, he worked at Kenyatta National Hospital and then transferred to Taita Taveta for a brief internship there. His first official job was at Unga Feeds where he worked for a few years and had the chance to travel to Britain as part of his career with them.

 

In 1990, Godfrey made the bold decision to leave his traditional job and pursue his dream of starting his own business. He founded a pharmacy in Gilgil, which quickly grew and allowed him to expand to Naivasha, opening a second branch shortly thereafter. In 1997, he helped to found Westway Primary school Gilgil which continues to thrive until today. Godfrey’s courage and dreams led him to America in 1999 where he rebuilt a life devoted to his children. He lived in Wichita, KS briefly and then moved to Kansas City where he relocated with his 3 daughters. He settled there until March of this year when he moved to Jacksonville, FL.  

 

Illness —

Godfrey was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer in February of 2023 and received treatment at Overland Park Regional, Menorah Medical Center, KU Medical center and the Mayo Clinic. He fought relentlessly and kept the faith until the end.

 

Spiritual Life —

Godfrey have his life to Christ on February 12th 2023. He engaged in family prayers every week and this anchored him throughout his journey.

 

Legacy —

Godfrey worked tirelessly as a pharmacist and in the healthcare field impacting not only his patients but also building a foundation for his children’s future. He instilled in his children the importance of hard work, sacrificial love and strength. Through his example, he helped shape his children into kind, strong and independent individuals. 

 

Godfrey’s love extended beyond his family. He had plans of building a health center back in his home town of Muranga in order to give back to his community. He was compassionate, hardworking and had unwavering optimism about the future. 

 

Godfrey’s passing leaves a void in the lives of those who loved him, but his memory will continue to inspire us to live with purpose, love unconditionally, and cherish every moment. His family takes comfort in knowing that he knew the Lord and will spend eternity in the arms of his Savior. His legacy will live on through his children and the love they shared for him. 

 

Rest in eternal peace, dear Godfrey. Your love, impact and strong spirit will never fade.
